President John Dramani Mahama has ignited fresh hope among thousands of trained teachers after announcing that a new nationwide teacher recruitment exercise will begin soon, following the government’s approval of financial clearance.
Speaking during his ongoing “Resetting Ghana Tour,” the President confirmed that the long-awaited recruitment is now back on track.
“Recruitment will start as funding has been approved,” he assured.
Thousands of Teaching Jobs Coming
According to the announcement, the government is preparing to recruit between 6,000 and 10,000 teachers in the first phase of the exercise.
The initiative is expected to:
Address the shortage of teachers across the country
Improve education delivery in rural and underserved communities
Provide jobs for trained but unemployed graduates
Major Shift: No More “Election-Year Recruitment”
In a significant policy change, President Mahama revealed that Ghana is moving away from the old system where teacher recruitment was often tied to election cycles.
Instead, the government will introduce:

Continuous and regular recruitment of teachers
This means graduates can now expect more consistent employment opportunities, rather than waiting years for recruitment windows.
Decentralisation: Districts to Take Charge
One of the boldest reforms announced is the plan to decentralise teacher recruitment.
Instead of relying solely on the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters:
Recruitment could be handled directly by District Assemblies
Why this matters:
Faster recruitment at the local level
Immediate response to teacher shortages in specific areas
Better support for rural schools
President Mahama questioned the current system, suggesting that districts should not have to wait before hiring teachers they urgently need.
